Artist Statement

These contemplative abstract paintings are inspired by my lifelong observations of nature in the Pacific Northwest. The imagery slowly reveals itself, just as nature reveals itself when you slow down, and intimately observe in the present moment..

I clear my mind, and then pick out some colors to explore with. Then, I just let my mind wander as I intuitively create marks with the paint, creating in a language uniquely my own.

A structure, rhythmic textures emerge . As the painting develops, I continue building up layers of paint and translucent epoxy resin mixed with glass and clay to create depth and dimension. A recording of my thought process, as my mind dances with the paint, and wanders in a garden of light.

I think painting can be very much like going on a solo hiking adventure, to a place I've never been. -Andie Trosper DeRoux

Process

All paintings are painted flat on tables in my studio in South Seattle using acrylic paint, mediums, watercolors, oxides, dry pigments and layered translucent non-toxic UV stable epoxy art resin on archival cradled wood panels. I have a composites background and been experimenting with epoxy resin as an art medium for painting and sculpture for over 30 years. Some of the paintings have a finish applied so that they appear soft to the touch. Some of them are left glossy with a glass-like surface. I also have a ceramic sculpture background, so I sometimes want them to look more like the ceramic glazes applied to clay forms. The sides of the paintings are also painted to give them a sculptural dimension adding to the perception that the paintings are quick thick and solid. . The paintings look like they appear to have some weight, however because they are built up on archival cradled wood panels they will hang on a normal wall with screw-in anchors. Most paintings weight between 5-30lbs, depending upon how many layers have been applied to the surface.
